From Roots to Canopy: How to Design a Fulfilling Portfolio Career

A few days ago, I ran a collective imagination session with coaches, reflecting on their portfolio careers. As (un-)usual, we climbed trees….

Crawling under the surface and touching the soil to find the nutrients, the fungi, the intelligence, culture, heritage, values…

Hugging the trunk, feeling the spine, the solid skills and experience, the conditions that keep us relatively safe.
But also the possible mushrooms that sap the solidity of the trunk, suck its juices out and for what…

Climbing up the tree, up to the branches, we looked at what is being grown, delivered in service, offered, bartered, transformed… observing, pruning, shading, smelling, seeing, hearing…

From the canopy, we considered the context and forces in and around the portfolio: the air, the rain, the birds, other insects, the noise, other trees, other plants, etc..

And we then answered the question again:

What could a diverse and fulfilling coaching career portfolio look like when it leverages your unique strengths, expertise, and passions across multiple professional domains… the relationships you’ve grown…. and not just that?
